Paytm – Taking The Concept Of Pay Through Mobile To An Entirely Different Level

With the dependency on mobile increasing with each passing day, it is really not surprising that these devices have now gone beyond the mere means of communication that they were originally intended to be. Consequently there has been a great scope for companies offering the users the freedom to manage their various expenses with the help of their Smartphone. Paytm is the first Indian company to have not only recognized the potential of this untapped market but become the leading provider of a reliable mobile commerce platform in India. The company has, within a short duration of 6 years, changed the manner in which Indian masses pay for different services and products in a hassle free manner.

Origin And Growth

Paytm which is an acronym for “Pay Through Mobile”, was founded by Vijay Shekhar Sharma in 2010 in Noida, India. The company was launched as an incubated startup of One97 Communication, the country’s leading mobile internet company. For the first four years, Paytm restricted its services to providing the facility of prepaid mobile recharge, utility bill payment and DTH recharge to its customers. However, as its user base increased, the startup expanded into other service areas and has today has emerged as a complete marketplace for its users, just like Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon. The company has already crossed the level of 100million registered users and receives a whooping 60 million orders per month. In fact, according to a survey, Patym has recently replaced Amazon to emerge as the leader in terms of total number of app downloads.

Paytm started showing major growth within just one year of its initiation and in 2013 the company recorded a massive 350% as compared to the previous financial year. However, the company’s e-commerce services received a significant boost in March 2015, when India’s leading industrialist, Mr. Ratan Tata made a personal investment in Paytm.  During the same month, the company received a further investment of $575million from Alibaba Group, an e-commerce company from China. This investment was made after an affiliate of Alibaba Group, named Ant Financial Services, entered into a strategic partnership with One97 and became the owner of 25% stake in the company.

Later in the same year, i.e. 2015, Paytm, RBI approved the company’s license application for starting the first payments’ bank in India. This bank will provide new services such as debit cards, savings accounts, online banking and transfers, to the users to help build a cashless economy. The company has also been approved as the operating unit for Bharat Bill Payment System, which makes it easy for the users pay their bills at anytime and from anywhere. The company also gained sponsorship rights from BCCI for all international and domestic bilateral series that will be hosted by the cricket board for a period of four years starting from August 2015.
